The Spring Calculations spread sheet was written to aid in the mathematical calculations when replacing mainsprings in clocks (or any other mainspring driven device). The spreadsheet contains 5 forms divided into 2 main categories:
Spring Barrel Calculations
These two forms allow the user to calculate the maximum length and/or thickness of a spring that will properly operate in a spring barrel
of given dimension. The calculations assume that the spring barrel is half filled with spring. The first form computes spring length in a barrel, given spring thickness. The second form computes spring thickness in a barrell, given spring length.
Data can be entered in inches only. Answers are provided in both inches and millimeters.
Spring Strength Calculations
The first two forms allow the user to determine new spring length and/or thickness of a new spring given the old spring width, length
and thickness, and assuming the same or different desired relative strength of the new spring.
The third form calculates relative strength of a new spring given the width, length and thickness of the old and new spring in consideration.
Data can be entered in inches only. Answers are provided in both inches and millimeters
